A Note From Charles

Dear {!name_fix},

The first few weeks of a new year are when arguably more “big” life-changing decisions get made than at any other time of the year. It’s a time when we look forward enthusiastically to the opportunities ahead of us and when we reflect on the year that has passed.

I have been in that kind of mood recently. As an immigration practitioner, I take my work seriously and looking back over 2005, I got thinking about all the people who are planning to come and live in this great country we call Canada. And my mind wandered to the question I very often hear from prospective immigrants: “How is the economy?”

That question is a difficult one for me to answer; firstly I am not an economist and secondly, in my opinion, surely economies can only be assessed over a period of time and not at a particular moment in time? So looking back over the 12 months of 2005 creates the perfect opportunity for doing just that.

Last year Canada experienced growth from the west coast to the east coast and most places in between, unemployment hit its lowest levels in years, inflation was kept under control and budgets ended up with big surpluses.

There was a substantial decline in the ratio of national debt to gross domestic product, international trade grew and expanded, the Canadian dollar gained against the US dollar again (that’s four years in a row!), and Canada’s stock market finished at number 1 place within the world’s major stock markets with a currency adjusted gain of 25%. That puts Canada right up there at the top of the G-8 countries and indeed, possibly at the top within the entire industrialized world.

So, I guess my answer to the question, “How is the economy?” has got to be “Great!!” I don’t for a moment regret the decision my family and I made to come to Canada. As a South African, there were good reasons to come to Canada then. The booming economy provides even more appealing reasons to come and live in Canada now!

We may see you here one day too?

Warm wishes and the best to you,

Breaking News From Canada

Talk about prosperity! The province of Alberta is experiencing such an incredibly booming economy that a $400.00 cheque was recently mailed to every man, woman and child in the province of Alberta who had either filed an income-tax return for 2004 or is registered to receive a child-benefits tax credit .

So many cheques were delivered that delivery had to be staggered to enable the postal authorities to get the cheques to mail boxes. A total amount of $1.4 billion was distributed so that Alberta residents could share in the resource revenue of that province.

To sweeten the surprise and to promote their businesses, some stores are offering cheque recipients a 20%, and in one instance a 100% bonus if they use the money to buy merchandise from that store.

I heard from a friend in Calgary, Alberta this week that a local fast food outlet had been forced to close its doors because it could not find employees to staff the business. Other people tell me that there are very few stores that haven’t got “Help Wanted” signs hanging in the windows. The point here is that there are so many well-paying jobs available that there just aren’t enough people to fill every employment opportunity.

It was recently reported that in the entire Calgary area there are only about 1 150 homes for sale, which if you consider the size of Calgary, isn’t many. The average used to be about 6000 homes at any one time. There is such a strong flow of money that homes are bought up in many instances the same day they come on the market. The stories about the wait lines at the high end car dealerships are another story! No wonder this city is called “Boomtown!”

So, how do the two biggest cities in the province of Alberta, Calgary and Edmonton compare, when it comes to buying a home?

The average price of a single family home in Edmonton will cost you about 25% less than in Calgary and about 22% less for a condominium (flat).

And when it comes to the weather, how does Alberta rate? Winters in Alberta can be very cold with heavy snowfalls, but according to Environment Canada (Canada’s weather department) Calgary has the most sunny days year-round of any Canadian city, it has the most sunny days in cold months and Calgary has the sunniest winter of any Canadian city.

Nature has blessed Alberta with the incredible Rocky Mountains and the province caters for ski enthusiasts from around the world with top class ski destinations. There are also the most incredibly scenic places to visit in Alberta, during both winter and summer months.

So, if you’re thinking about coming to live in Canada, you may want to seriously consider the province of Alberta and its cities of Calgary or Edmonton as your destination.

Alberta is a province where wealth and income are on the rise. Let’s face it. There are very few provinces, states or countries outside of China where Gross Domestic product is projected to rise by an incredible 7% this year as it is for Alberta!

Charles Recommends

As I mentioned at the beginning of this newsletter, the first few weeks of a new year are when more “big” life-changing decisions are made than at any other time of the year. It seems that the beginning of each year brings with it the hope and confidence that we can make the things happen that we want for ourselves and for our families.

But, as the year goes by, the distractions become more and we allow ourselves to get caught up in the day-to-day routines and busyness of our lives. And then we put off those important decisions and worse still, we put off taking the action we need to take, to make those dreams and life-changing opportunities reality. And before long, one year, two years or even three years pass, and then you hear about someone else who is living your dream. And for you it is still only a dream!

The year is new. Opportunity abounds. And you can still make your dreams come true. There is still time to take action this year without having to put it off until 2007 or 2008 or maybe for all-time.

If you want to explore the possibility of coming to live in Canada’s best kept secret, the province of Alberta, or if you are want to come and live in one of the other incredible provinces and cities in Canada, my team and I are standing by to help you make your dream reality!

We know just how important it is for you to get your plans underway. If you are committed to action because you don’t want to put off your plans any longer and if you want to rely on our professional expertise and solid experience to represent you in the process and to get the work done for you, I would like to hear from you.

We will assess the chances of you and your family being approved as permanent residents of Canada. We will tell you how and why you can rely on us, and we will tell you about the fees that you will need to pay the Canadian government as well as the fees that we will ask you to pay us to represent you in the process.

Now its time for you to decide. Rather than simply dreaming about it, why don't you make it happen?
